James Preston Belt, Jr., 60, died Aug. 17 in Savannah, GA from complication of heart surgery.

The son of the late Preston and Glenna Belt, his mother died at his birth and Jim was reared by his late grandparents, Sam and Mabel Belt. They were residents of Boone County.

Jim, a singer, composer and pianist, began his career at the age of three appearing in church and school functions, going on to entertain all over the United States and two tours of Europe, mainly in Switzerland and Norway. He was well known in the Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and Savannah areas, the “Low country” as he referred to it. He performed many of his compositions as well as several of the jazz greats. He appeared in concert in Canaan Valley on two occasions.

Surviving are a son, Adam of Conyers, Ga; two sisters, Shelia Rhodes, Debra Lily, Charleston area; his step-mother, Juanita Steel of the Beckley area; a business partner, Frank Bright; traveling companion, on his European tours, Gerry Hubbard of Thomas.

A memorial service was held Aug. 21 in Savannah, and a final service at Johnson Funeral Home, Marmet, Aug. 23., Burial will be at his mother’s place of interment . BY his request, he was cremated.
