James R. “Uke” Dalton, 67, of Route 1, Moatsville, was dead on arrival at the Broaddus Hospital on Saturday afternoon, March 29, 2003, following a sudden and unexpected illness.

He was born June 30, 1935, at Brownton, Barbour County, the son of the late James William and Myrtle Virginia Kennedy Dalton.

His wife, the former Helen Marie Shanabarger, preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1973.

Surviving are three daughters, Julia Sue Cutright and husband, Bill, Brenda Jean Dalton and companion, Tommy Mayle, all of Moatsville, and Barbara Lynn Mayle and husband, Gene, of Philippi; two sons, John Gregory Dalton and William Riley “Jack” Dalton and companion, “Sissy,” all of Philippi; two brothers, Andrew H. “Ank” Dalton of Grafton, and Holly E. Dalton of Carrollton, Ohio; four sisters, Mary “Dollie” Garland and Brenda Joyce “Bo” Mayle, both of Kissimmee, Fla., Martha “Jean” Wells of Virginia and Myrtle R. “Cude” Croston of Columbus, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Eddie Dalton, Dawn Kennedy, Tommy Dalton, Jamie Mayle, Jeanna Mayle, Heather Dalton, Jennifer Mayle, Brent and Sabrina Dalton, Jenny Miller and Amanda Phillips; and great-grandchildren, Destiny, Kayla, Angel F., Kyra, Eddie Jr., Timmy, Victoria and Anjewl M.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Hilda Chaney; by one half brother, Buster Dalton; and by one great-granddaughter, Helen Rosalee Dalton.

Mr. Dalton was a retired construction laborer. He was an avid outdoorsman with many friends and also enjoyed watching sports on television.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Friends may call at the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Melenus Mayle officiating. Interment will follow in the Welch Cemetery.
