Janice Miriam Schenck Nelson 1932-2022 Obituary
Janice Miriam Schenck Nelson, 90, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022, at home with family by her side and under the care of West Virginia Caring.
Janice was born Sunday, Feb. 7, 1932, in Yokohama, Japan, a daughter of the late Rev. Harold W. Schenck and Elsie F. (Schmidt) Schenck. On July 9, 1955, she married Robert Kincaid Nelson who preceded her in death Jan. 24, 2021.
Left to cherish her memory are two children, David Nelson and his wife, Margy, of Elkins, and Douglas Nelson and his wife, Angelica of Durham, North Carolina; grandchildren, Cheryl DeWitt and Dustin Bruley; great-grandchildren, Daniel DeWitt and Bryan Bruley; close niece, Cherrie Johnson; and several other nieces and nephews.
Preceding her death besides her parents and husband was one sister, Joan Elizabeth Johnson.
Janice was a graduate of Montclair High School in New Jersey. She then received her bachelor’s degree from University of Vermont and then received her master’s degree from Stonybrook University in New York. Janice was employed as a second grade teacher in Ironia, New Jersey, Camillus, New York, and later retired from Miller Place Primary School in Long Island, New York. She was in charge of the Connestee Falls Beautification Committee in Brevard, North Carolina, and enjoyed helping out with fundraisers for Connestee Fire Rescue.
Janice enjoyed crafts like stamping and coloring and really loved tending to her flower gardens. After her retirement, she was a volunteer tutor at the elementary school in Brevard, North Carolina. Janice was a member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and a member of the Presbyterian women in Circle One.
Janice’s request for cremation was honored. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Randolph Funeral Home Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. Rev. Dr. Peter Vial will officiate.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Janice’s name to the Connestee Fire Rescue, 400 E. Fork Rd. Brevard, NC 28712 or the fire department of your choice or the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church Women’s Scholarship Fund.
