Jean Hickman Burns 1912-2002 Obituary

Jean Hickman Burns, 89, of Parsons, died Thursday evening, Jan. 31, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to a stroke.

Mrs. Burns was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Doddridge County, a daughter of the late Stanley Brannon Hickman and Lena Schoonover Hickman.

On May 9, 1936, she married Robert A. Burns, who preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1961.

Surviving are a foster daughter, Sue Ann Ketterman Breedlove and husband, Dale, Uniontown, Ohio; three nieces; a nephew; four great-nephews, five great-nieces and a special sister-in-law, Maude Burns, St. George.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Madeline Miller; and a brother-in-law, Lester Miller.

Mrs. Burns was a 1930 graduate of Parsons High School. She attended Davis & Elkins College, Shepherd College and Glenville College. She received her bachelor’s degree from Fairmont State College and her master’s degree from West Virginia University. She was a well-known educator, having taught at Chestnut Ridge, Beckner, Sugarland, Leadmine, Mill Run, Salem Davis High School, Parson Graded School, Hamrick Graded School and Parsons High School, retiring in 1973 with more than 40 years of service. She was a member of Beta Omega Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi, National Education Honorary Fraternity, the National Retired Teachers Association, West Virginia State and County Retired School Employees, Charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Blackwater Chapter since 1934, in which she served as past regent and 30 years as registrar. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.

Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home parlor Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Leon Hevener and the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating. Interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery.
