Joann Gay (Bunner) Malcomb, age 90, passed away February 10, 2022, at Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center.

Joann was born Friday, January 1, 1932, in Chemical, Upshur County, WV, a daughter of the late Charles F. Bunner and Anna Alma (Hawkins) Bunner. She married Oscar Richard Malcomb on September 17, 1950. Mr. Malcomb preceded her on May 2, 2018. They had celebrated 67 years of marriage.

She is survived by three children: Ronnie Richard Malcomb and wife Robin of Elkins, Kerry Gay Wilson and husband Steve of Elkins, and Andrew Dean Malcomb and wife Christy of Valley Bend; two grandchildren: Christina Lynn Kelly and husband Matt of Fairmont, and Valerie Elizabeth Malcomb of Austin, TX; one sister, Judy Peterson of Surfside Beach, SC, one brother Paul Bunner and wife Susan of Brunswick, OH, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Preceding Joann in death besides her parents were six siblings, James, Robert and Kenneth Bunner, Jeannette Easton, Jean Posey and Janice Powell, and one great-grandson, Logan Kelly.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who canned and preserved the many harvests from her husband’s vegetable gardens. Her basket of homemade jellies and apple butter was always a sought-after item in the silent auction at the Bunner family reunion. She had a flare for “repurposing” long before it was popular and could take another person’s trash and turn it into a treasure. She was also an excellent seamstress who made her own and her daughter’s wedding gowns, Forest Festival princess gowns, other clothing, and many items she used to decorate the family home.

Joann was a member of the Farm Women/Extension Homemakers/CEOS for over sixty years. She had countless volunteer hours as a member of the Memorial General Hospital/ERCC Auxiliary and in the ERCC gift shop. She was also a member of Huttonsville Rebekah Lodge No. 103 and a Past Noble Grand.

Joann knew Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was a faithful member of the Valley Bend United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She taught Sunday School and also served as church treasurer until she turned 80, at which time she stated that was long enough!

Joann’s request for cremation will be honored, and a memorial service will take place at a later date. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Mountain Hospice, 1002 S. Crim Avenue, Belington, WV 26250, or Tyrand Cooperative Ministries, P. O. Box 365, Mill Creek, WV 26280.
