John Christopher Zizzi, Sr., age 89 years, a life-long resident of Elkins, WV and more recently a resident of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully Sunday evening, August 1, 2010 at Preston House Alzheimer’s Facility in Charlotte, NC, following an extended battle with advanced Alzheimer’s disease. He was born Thursday, April 7, 1921 at Star City, WV a son of the late William Zizzi and Rose Provenzola Zizzi. Surviving are three sons: John C. Zizzi, Jr. and wife, Barbara Ann, Charlotte, NC, Bill Zizzi, Ashland City, TN, and Sam Zizzi and wife, Liz, Morgantown, WV. Four daughters: Mary Bowen and husband, Ray, Bel Air, MD, Cathy MacDonell, Mocksville, NC, Annette Evans and husband Phil, Huntersville, NC and Lisa Bain and husband Dave, Smithfield, RI. Three sisters: Teresa Angotti, Morgantown, WV, Ann Julian, Glendora, CA, and Mary Brotherton, West Covina, CA, seventeen grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Also surviving is his former wife, Eleanor Pingley Zizzi. Preceding him in death is one brother: Joe Zizzi.

Prior to moving to Elkins, John worked in the Morgantown-area coal mines, served in the Civilian Conservation Corp and State-side in the US Army from 1942 -45. He owned and operated the former The Blue Grass Tavern in Elkins for 21 years from 1960 to 1981. He was a history buff, he enjoyed playing cards, frequenting yard sales and bargaining for deals, an enthusiastic sports fan. He particularly enjoyed WVU football. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren during the holidays and at family reunions. He was a longtime member of the St. Brendan Catholic Church of Elkins, WV. The family will receive friends at the St. Brendan Catholic Church at Elkins, WV on Saturday August 7, 2010 from 10 AM until 12 PM. At 12PM the Liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated. The Very Reverend Father Donald X. Higgs, V.F. will preside and interment will follow at the Saint Brendan Cemetery at Elkins, WV.
