John Lucas Carl 1901-2002 Obituary

John Lucas Carl, 100, a resident of Broaddus Long Term Care, died Monday evening, July 29, 2002, in the Long Term Care Facility, following a long and productive life.

He was born Dec. 19, 1901, in Cove District, Barbour County, a son of the late Daniel M. and Montana (Forman) Carl.

In November 1928, he married the former Mabel Nestor, who preceded him in death on June 21, 1970.

Survivors include one brother-in-law, Otto Nestor, Kasson; and several Nestor nieces and nephews, and several cousins including, Mrs. Ruth Shaffer, Philippi, George Forman, Longmont, Colo., and Ralph Forman, Bedford, Va.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Henry D. Carl.

Mr. Carl had a long affiliation with Alderson-broaddus College, the Myers Clinic Hospital and the Broaddus Hospital.

For a time, the Carl family’s farm was operated as the Alderson-broaddus College farm, utilizing a farm manager and student labor to provide meat, dairy products and vegetables for use by the college.

Mr. Carl joined the Myers Clinic Hospital staff in 1940 and served a year of on-the-job training, without pay, in the maintenance department, before receiving employee status in 1941. His duties also included transportation of student nurses, via station wagon, between the A-b campus and the Myers Clinic Hospital for clinical training during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl made a substantial contribution to Broaddus Hospital during the construction of the facility. Mr. Carl came to Broaddus Hospital as director of maintenance when the facility opened its doors for the first time in 1954. He continued to be a loyal employee until he chose semi-retirement in 1968. Even in semi-retirement, Mr. Carl continued his involvement in and support for Broaddus Hospital. He served in a consulting role during the construction of the Chandler Wing as well as the emergency room and auditorium addition. He had made his home in the Chandler Wing since 1973 and though retired in the late 1970s he continued to be a visible member of the health care team, often assisting with unlocking doors, reading blue-prints and sharing invaluable information. He kept himself versed on current hospital issues and was often a reference source for the staff. He also served as an active member of the board of trustees of the hospital for several years. Mr. Carl had resided in the Long Term Care Facility since it opened in September 2000. Broaddus Hospital was his home and its staff was his family. His service to the Myers Clinic Hospital and Broaddus Hospital total a remarkable 52 years.

Mr. Carl was a member of the Crim Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as a consultant on building matters. He was a 50 plus year member of Bigelow Lodge 562, AF & AM, Tygarts Valley Chapter 39, RAM and Philippi Chapter 41, OES.

Friends may call at the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Alicia Rapking and Robert “Buck” True officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Morris Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites accorded by Bigelow Lodge 52, AF & AM.
