John W. Hogan 1936-2002 Obituary

Dr. John W. Hogan, 66, a resident of Hurricane, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Thomas Memorial Hospital in Charleston after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 20, 1936, at Monterville, a son of the late William Wesley and Belva Mae Channell Hogan.

He was married to the former Geneva M. Snyder, who survives at Hurricane.

Also surviving are four children, Vera Standish and Gayle Allison, both of Hurricane, Rae Anne Blair of Shinnston, and Lee Hogan of Kanawha County; two stepchildren, Eric Brian Jones of Charleston and Melissa Davis of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Edsel Hogan of Franklin; four sisters, Leah Kincaid of Minooka, Ill., Elsie Hite of Jacksonville, Ark., Marie Harris of Clarksburg, and Elaine Valentine of Elkins; four grandchildren, Amanda and Ashley Standish, Leigh Anne and William Wesley Allison; three stepgrandchildren, Carrie Morrison, Rivkah and Daniel Blair; one stepgreat-grandson, Shaun Patrick Morrison; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Edmond Hogan and William Sherman Hogan; and one sister, Lucy Prosser.

Mr. Hogan earned his bachelor’s degree in 1957 from Berea College, Berea, Ky., his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1959 and his doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute at Blacksburg, Va. in 1969. He was a retired math professor from Marshall University with 29 years of service and a former chairman of Marshall University Math Department. He was a member of the American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America and the West Virginia Academy of Science.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Joe Given, a friend of the Hogan family officiating. Interment will follow in the Hevener Cemetery in Monterville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Marshall University Foundation Inc., in care of Dr. John W. Hogan memorial scholarship, 1 John Marshall Drive, Huntington, W.Va. 25755.
