Joseph R. Howes, 81, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, in Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins.

Mr. Howes was born June 7, 1920, in Mabie, a son of the late William Bruce and Myrtle Currence Howes.

He married Mary V. Loudin Howes, who survives in Buckhannon.

Also surviving are three children, Wayne Allen Howes, Clarksville, Tenn., Lois Ann Howell and husband, Kenneth Webster, Buckhannon, and Harold Ray Howes and wife, Retha Imogene, Crawford; eight grandchildren, Geoffrey Howes and Greggory Howes, both of Clarksville, Tenn., Robert Longerbeam, Clarksburg, Kimberly Thomas, Craig Howell and Jason Howes, all of Buckhannon, Sarah Howes and Donna Jo Howes, both of Crawford; and seven great-grandchildren, Claudia Howes, Sacramento, Calif., Tyler Thomas and Haley Thomas, both of Buckhannon, Cody Howes and Bailey Howes, Clarksville, Tenn., Joshua Longerbeam, Clarksburg, and Keelin Howes, Buckhannon.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Otha, Frank and Henry Howes; and four sisters, Minnie Wright, Bessie Miller, Pearl McGilton and Juanita Howes.

Mr. Howes served in the infantry in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Normandy and Germany campaigns. He was wounded twice in France in 1944 and in Germany in 1945. He was decorated with the EAME Ribbon, two battle stars, a good conduct medal and the Purple Heart.

He was a retired coal miner and had served as constable for Upshur County. He was a member of the VFW and Masonic Lodge in Buckhannon and a member of the United Mine Workers Union.

He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church.

Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at Tomblyn-whitescarver Funeral Home Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be at West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow.
