Josephine Merle “Billy” Tharp, 83, a resident of Pickens, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Alice Butko, under the care of hospice.

She was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Pickens, the daughter of the late William Edward and Roxie Isbelle Hefner Byrd.

Her husband, Birten V. Tharp, preceded her in death.

Surviving are 14 children, Lulu Belle Jones of Pickens, V. Alice Butko and husband, Henry, of Pickens, William Edward Tharp and wife, Gloria, of Quakertown, Pa., Esker S. Tharp of Pickens, Burton V. Tharp Jr. and wife, Faye, of Pickens, Violet V. Butcher and husband, Everett of Vadis, Lenore J. Adams of Dunn, N.C., Rose M. Gwyn of Moravian Falls, N.C., Peggy L. Bennett and husband, Jim, of French Creek, Christine B. Tharp and fiance, Don, of Cabool, Mo., Wilma L. Hamrick and husband, Junior, of Buckhannon, Walter O. Tharp of Buckhannon, John H. Tharp of Buckhannon and Opal K. Tharp of French Creek; 40 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Edrie Catherine Sines of Buckhannon; four nephews and one niece.

She was preceded in death by one son, Howard Irvin; one grandson, Boyd Irvin Stitt Sr.; one great-granddaughter, Stephanie Stitt; and one brother, Eugene Byrd.

Viewing will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Donald Butcher and the Rev. Frank Long will officiate and interment will follow in the Pickens Cemetery. The Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel of Buckhannon is in charge of arrangements for Josephine Merle “Billy” Tharp.
