Kurt Edward Ankrom, 80, departed this life, Wednesday, July 7th, 2021 in Colonial Heights, Virginia.
Kurt was born to the late Peter Edward and Dorothy (Payne) Ankrom in Charleston, West Virginia on November 17th, 1940. Kurt grew up in the Shillelagh Road neighborhood of Chesapeake, Virginia. He graduated from
Deep Creek High School in 1958. He spent two years at the (now defunct) Frederick College in Portsmouth, Virginia. He enlisted in 1960 in the United States Coast Guard and attended training in Groton, Connecticut. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve in 1996, after 36 years of service as a
Machinery Technician and Pistol Marksman (Expert), as having traveled the world in his Coast Guard Reserve Duties.
On September 7, 1963, he was united in marriage to Dorene (Dodie) Channell in Elkins, WV, who preceded him in death in 2017.
For 15 years, Kurt served as Director of Public Works for the City of Colonial Heights, VA from 1988 to 2003. He also served as City Manager, Public Works Director, and City Engineer in Elkins and Oak Hill, WV., Clayton, NC., and Williamsburg, VA. In 1976, Kurt received his Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from Christopher Newport and College of William and Mary.
He loved to hunt deer and other game every fall with his nephew, David Channell of Ruckersville, VA.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristyn of Colonial Heights, his granddaughter, Elizabeth of Raleigh, NC, his nephews and hunting buddies, David and Tim Channell, of Ruckersville and Chesapeake, VA. His niece, Lyn of Zephyrhills, Florida.
Burial at Valley Head Cemetery in Randolph County, WV., will be at a later date.
