Leah Bell Heckel Hammer, 85, from Valley Bend died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, in Virginia Beach, Va.

Leah will be remembered for her strength, her sense of humor and her spirit. She was a loving mother and grandmother to six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She enjoyed an especially close relationship with her brother and two sisters. Her independent nature and compassion for others will live on in all of us and sustain us. In her final hours, Leah was surrounded by her loved ones and comforted by the staff at Sentara Leigh Hospital and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

While she resided in Hopewell, Va., for several years, most of Leah’s life was lived surrounded by the mountains she loved in West Virginia. She returns home to those mountains to rest. Her two husbands, August Amiel Heckel and Robert Earl Hammer, rest there as well.

Leah’s survivors include her son, Father Guerrick OCS of Mepkin Abbey, Moncks Corner, S.C., her son, Charles, his wife, Sandy, a grandson, Chris, his wife, Jackie, a granddaughter, Lisa, her husband, Steve, and their children, Madison and Jake of Ontario, Canada, a son, Michael of Valley Bend, a daughter, Linda, her husband, Michael and their children Nathan and Cara of Chesapeake, Va., a son, John, his wife, Linda and their children Erich and Alison of Chesapeake, Va., a daughter, Susan, her husband, Warren and their children Aaron, Bryan and Leah of Palmyra, Va., a sister, Leta Cox of Valley Bend, a brother, Howard Bell, his wife, Ethelyn of Valley Bend, a sister, Bobbie Davies, her husband, Joe of Elkins, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Monday, Mrs. Hammer will be moved to St. Brendan Catholic Church where the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Father Guerrick and Father William Anderson will be the celebrants and interment will follow in St. Brendan Cemetery. The Tomblyn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Leah Bell Heckel Hammer.
