Leroy Ellis Chewning 1933-2020 Obituary

Leroy Ellis Chewning, 86, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Thursday, January 16, 2020, at home surrounded by family and friends and under the care of Mountain Hospice.

Leroy was born Saturday, July 8, 1933, in Cassity, a son of the late Nelson Chewning and Julia Thomason Chewning Cutright. On July 27, 1957, in Oakland, MD, he married the former Carolyn Ann Riley who preceded him in death.
Left to cherish Leroy’s memory are two daughters, Cindy Terry of Elkins and Kim Ross and husband, Bill, of Jimtown, four siblings, Regina “Tiddles” Chewning, Susie Whitehead of Georgia, Spider Chewning of Inwood, and Mike Cutright of South Carolina, six grandchildren, Melissa, Michelle, Alec, Drew, Justin, and Tayler, great-grandchildren, Braydan, Jace, Domanick, Kaleb, Kaitlin, Addysin, and one to arrive in March, and several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Jerry McCauley and wife, Ann, of Georgia.

Preceding Leroy in death besides his wife and parents was one son, Jeff Chewning, one grandson, Eric Terry, and several siblings.

Leroy attended the schools of Randolph County. He served with the United States Army in Korea. He worked as a coal miner for Island Creek Coal Company and Kitt Energy in Philippi for many years. He always kept his Chevy trucks spotless as well as his 1980 model dump-truck with which he enjoyed hauling gravel. He also enjoyed gardening and playing poker. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post #29, American Legion, the Tygarts Valley Post #3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Redmans Club.

Leroy’s request for cremation will be honored. Graveside services will be held at the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery in Cravensdale on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at 12 noon where members of the HW Daniels Post #29, American Legion, Tygarts Valley Post #3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and WV Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. After the service, there will be a Celebration of Life at “Leroy’s Garage”. The family requests memorial contributions be made in Leroy’s honor to Tygart Valley Post #3647, VFW, PO Box 826, Elkins, WV 26241, HW Daniels Post #29, American Legion, 326 Railroad Ave., Elkins, WV 26241, or to Mountain Hospice, 228 4th Street, Elkins, WV 26241.
