Leslie Carl Jones Jr. 1938-2002 Obituary

Leslie Carl Jones Jr., a resident of 123 Robert E. Lee Ave., Elkins, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2002, while bicycling on the Rails to Trails in Tucker County. He had been in his usual health, and his death was unexpected and attributed to a massive heart attack.

He was born Dec. 21, 1938, at Elkins, the son of the late Leslie Carl Jones Sr. and Verda D. Dayton Jones.

On May 8, 1990, at Elkins, he was married to the former Dixie S. Singleton, who survives.

Also surviving are five daughters, Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Yeary and her husband, Mike, Staunton, Va., Kimberly Rae “Kim” MacVean and husband, Chris, Elkins, Belinda Irene Jones, Mabie, Lea Ann McBride and husband, Larry, Mabie, and Jamie Sue Jones, Mabie; two brothers, Harry Richard Jones and his wife, Mary, Elkins, and Edward Darl Jones and his wife, Mary, St. Petersburg, Fla.; one sister, Helen Louise Lantz and her husband, Guy, Elkins; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Lee Rexrode, during 1973.

Mr. Jones was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1957, had worked for Labcraft, the Water Department for the city of Elkins, Western-maryland Railroad and later CSX Railroad at Elkins and Hagerstown, Md., and retired from the Davis Memorial Hospital Maintenance Department.

He was previously active with the Elkins Lions Club; loved bicycling, gardening, making maple syrup and woodworking; and was an avid outdoorsman.

Mr. Jones was a life member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon of the church and head usher for many years. He was president of the Men’s Bartlett Bible Class of the church.

Friends will be received today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church parlor. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Jones will be moved to the First Baptist Church sanctuary where final rites will be held at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli and the Rev. Nancy I. Stevens will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens, formerly the IOOF Cemetery, at Elkins. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church of Elkins, 412 Randolph Ave., Elkins, W.Va., 26241.
