Leslie “Les” David Carpenter, 59, of Clarksburg, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2020, at United Hospital Center.

He was born on February 18, 1961, in Clarksburg, a son of Betty Lou Zirkle Carpenter and the late David Carl Carpenter.

In addition to his mother, he is also survived by one aunt, Mary Rose Carpenter; one great-aunt, Margaret “Bunny” Zirkle; numerous cousins, including special cousins Kathy and Chris Baxla and Carla and Bill White; numerous friends, including Melinda Shaw Kreps and his cat, Tinkerbelle.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Oren and Maxine Scott Zirkle and his paternal grandparents, Carl and Iva Vincent Carpenter.
Les was a graduate of W.I. High School, Class of 1979.

He received an accounting degree from Fairmont State College. He earned his MBA from WVU in 1983.

He then began working for Rex Hide and then in 1987, he began working as an accountant in the controller’s office at WVU.

In 1994, he accepted the position of manager for financial aid information systems and during his tenure in the Financial Aid Office, Carpenter served in several administrative positions, including the interim director from 2001-03. He had served as the chief business officer for Division of Student Life since 2003.

In that role, he had overseen the budgets for more than 25 Student Life units, the Student Affairs Business Operations unit, which included the Payroll Office and the Mountaineer Card Office.

In 2015, Carpenter played an integral role in the expansion of Mountie Bounty to include off-campus locations, increasing flexibility and variety of meal options for the WVU community.

Les retired after 31 years of service to WVU. Les enjoyed genealogy, antiques and auction sales, shopping and traveling and playing piano.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clarksburg, where he enjoyed singing in the choir.

He also sang with the Madrigals for several years.

He had touched so many people’s lives in a positive way and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday, June 1, 2020, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held privately for the family with Reverend Greg Godwin and Reverend Harry Holbert.

Interment will be in Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
