Mabel N. Herring, 99, a former resident of Findley Street in Elkins, departed this life on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center. She was born on Oct. 9, 1913, in Preston County, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Rhoda Lininger Niner.

She was married to Harold C. Herring, a well-known businessman, who preceded her in death on May 22, 1955.

Mrs. Herring is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Grace and Gene Carpenter, of Charlottesville, Va., Dottie and Bob Wamsley, of Elkins, and Ruth Parsons, of Charlottesville, Va.

Also surviving are two grandsons and their wives, Monte and Margaret Parsons and Shane and Misty Parsons, and their sons, Henry and Benjamin, all of Charlottesville, Va.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Her extended family included Todd and Lisa Wamsley, of Elkins, and their sons, Matthew and Andrew, and very special caregivers, Loretta Arbogast, Brenda Lamb and Carol Summerfield.

Mrs. Herring was employed by Memorial General Hospital for 28 years as an LPN and physical therapist prior to her retirement. She was honored as “Outstanding LPN of the Year’ in the state of West Virginia in 1962. She was a member of the Elkins Church of the Brethren and was blessed to receive cards and prayers from the “We Care Group” of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and Rev. Barry R. Moll officiating. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery.

A scholarship to benefit nursing students at Davis & Elkins College will be established in memory of Mrs. Herring. Memorial contributions may be made to the scholarship fund at Davis & Elkins School of Nursing, 100 Campus Drive, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mrs. Herring.

Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Mabel N. Herring.

Obituary

The Rev. Harold D. Garber, 71, of Petersburg, died on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at his home.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grove Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Burial will be private under the direction of Schaeffer Funeral Home services.
