Marie Miller Hammer, age 87 years, a resident of Country Club Road, Elkins, WV entered into eternal life early Saturday evening September 10, 2011 at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center in Elkins surrounded by her family.

She was born Tuesday, March 25, 1924 at Nestorville, WV a daughter of the late Floyd and Ethel Shroyer Miller. On October 5, 1941 in Oakland, MD, she was married to the late Guy St. Clair Hammer, Sr., who preceded her in death June 29, 1998. They had celebrated fifty-six years of marriage. Surviving are five sons, Guy St. Clair Hammer, Jr., and wife Jean, Bethesda, MD; Thomas Michael Hammer and wife Sherry, Elkins; Robert Bruce Hammer and wife Cindy, Beverly; Robin William Hammer, Elkins; and Mark Joseph Hammer and wife Mary Ann, Morgantown; two daughters, Sharon Hammer Helms and husband John Sarraga, Elkins; Dena Hammer Lang and husband Scott, State College, PA; one sister, Waneta Doyle, Elkins; twenty grandchildren, Guy Hammer, III, Harpers Ferry; Thomas Hammer, Baltimore, MD; Jennifer Hammer, Seattle, WA; Christina Helms McIntyre, Oak Hill, VA; Tracie Helms Hanson, Arlington, VA; Bert Sarraga, Woodbridge, VA; Stacy Sarraga, Houston, TX; Nicole Hammer Rowan; Adam D’Angelo; Jacob D’Angelo; Hope D’Angelo Anderson; and Chris Hussion all of Elkins; Amy Hussion, Martinsburg; Nashua Hammer, Elkins; Brooke Hammer, Morgantown; Meagan Lang, Nashville, TN; Morgan Lang; Mitchell Lang and Matthew Lang, all of State College, PA; Evan Hammer, Morgantown and twenty-one great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are three brothers, Dail Floyd; Wilbur G. and Robert Andrew Miller; and four sisters, Lucille E. Gum; Betty J. Waller; Dacotah E. Caudell; and Mattie Jean Cowden.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1942. She enjoyed dancing with her husband, hiking with her children and grandchildren, caving, camping, being an Explorer Scout Leader, and most of all playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She and her husband were the proprietors of Club Aero at the Elkins Airport. The Club Aero had the first television in Randolph County and five “Big Bands” including Ray McKinley, Skitch Henderson, Ray Anthony, Sam Donahue and three members of the Glen Miller Band. It later became the Aero Restaurant and Motel and then Aero Park rental properties. Marie was a member of the John Hart Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, the Hazelwood Community Education Outreach, the Delphia Rebekah Lodge # 62 and the Elkins Women’s Club. She was a member of Saint Brendan Catholic Church for sixty-nine years. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

The family will receive friends at the Saint Brendan Catholic Church from 3 to 4 PM, Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at which time the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF will be the Presider and interment will follow at the Saint Brendan Cemetery at Elkins, WV.
