Mary Ethel Elza, 84, a resident of Harman, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at 10:46 a.m. in Charleston Area Medical Hospital-Memorial Division, where she was admitted Friday morning. She had been in failing health for the past three years, however, death was sudden and unexpected. Death was attributed to cancer.

She was born March 11, 1918, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late George and Daisy Gordon.

She was united in marriage to Carl J. Elza, who preceded her in death in 1958.

Surviving are four daughters, Phyllis Webb of Harman, Winfred Kuhn of Keyser, Sharon Crossland and husband, Allen, of Davis, and Nancy Arbogast and husband, Ron, of Dryfork; four sons, Max Elza and wife, Sandra, Norman Elza and wife, Carolyn, Douglas Elza and wife, Linda, all of Elkins, and Carl “Jeff” Elza and wife, Jimmie, of Harman.

Also surviving are several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and was preceded in death by one son, Robert Warren Elza; one sister, Martha Gordon Gear; six brothers, Marvin, Virgil, Preston, Emerson, Vernon and Ivan “Pat” Gordon; and three grandsons, Allen “Ab” Elza, Eric Elza and Chris Sanders.

She was a homemaker. She loved sewing and quilting and was a good cook. She was a member of the Randolph County Senior Center and attended the Dryfork Assembly of God Church.

Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel today after 6 p.m. On Tuesday, Mrs. Elza will be moved to the Dryfork Assembly of God for visitation from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Kenneth Plaster, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Buena Cemetery in Canaan Valley. The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Mary Ethel Elza.
