MAUDALINE “MAUDIE” MONTGOMERY BARNARD, age 96 years, a resident of Elkins, WV, departed this life Friday afternoon, April 1, 2011 at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins, WV.

She was born Friday, September 11, 1914 near Buckhannon, WV a daughter of the late Clyde B. Montgomery and Hattie G. Grove Montgomery Proctor. On July 25, 1942 she was married to Lt. William Kent Barnard at Norfolk, VA, where he was serving on active duty as a Naval Reserve Officer. They had celebrated sixty-one years of marriage prior to his death on February 2, 2004. Surviving are two daughters, Jean Jones and husband Glen, Elkins; Elizabeth “Libby” Miller and husband Paul, Gahanna, OH; four grandchildren, Darin Jones and wife Beth, Crown Point, IN; Lauryn Jones Midani and husband Rotem, Pittsburgh, PA; Jeremy Miller, New Albany, OH; and Chad Miller and wife Emily, Westerville, OH; three great grandchildren, Megan Jones; Emily Midani; and Grant Miller; several nieces and nephews; and three cousins, Mary Lou Stageman, Council Bluffs, IA; Katie Pingley, who was like a sister, and Ralph Wilmoth, both of Elkins.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death is one sister, Elizabeth Montgomery Tyrer; one niece; and one nephew.

Maudie was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1933 and received a business certificate from Davis & Elkins College in 1934 where she was a member of the Phi Chi Sorority. She was employed by the Randolph County Department of Public Assistance prior to her marriage.

She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, the Adult Sunday School Class and Circle # 2. As a member of the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Maudie volunteered for more than fifty years until November 2010. She was also a charter member of the Elkins chapter of the American Cancer Society. Maudie’s strong will and determination was an inspiration to those who knew her. Her life was devoted to caring for her family, and she will be sadly missed.

Mrs. Barnard’s request for cremation was honored. The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 1 PM to 2 PM at which time a Memorial Service will be held. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment of the cremains will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins. WV.
