Melville Lee “Punch” O’Brien, 73, a resident of the Audra community in Belington, departed this life at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday evening, Oct. 23, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown, after being a patient there for nine weeks.

He was born March 7, 1929, near Belington, a son of the late Michael Aaron O’Brien Sr. and Goldie Wilson O’Brien.

In 1955, he was married to the former Helen Booth, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Steve O’Brien and wife, Vea, and Shawn O’Brien, all of Belington; two sisters, Patricia Douglas and husband, Dan, of Vienna, and Sharon Stone and husband, Charles, of Bloomington, Ind. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Richard Scott O’Brien and wife, Marsha, Casey Edmond and husband, Jason, Eric Harris and Kelli Harris; five great-grandchildren, Trenton O’Brien, Devin, Ethan and Autumn Edmond and Tre Plauger; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Aaron O’Brien Jr.

Mr. O’Brien was a 1946 graduate of the Belington High School and attended the West Virginia Wesleyan College for two years, where he was a business and religion major. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. at the end of World War II, and was retired from Brown Lumber Co., where he was employed in the sales department. He was a member of the VFW Laurel Mountain Post 410 in Belington, where he was a past commander, was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion in Elkins, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Clarksburg and was a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, when services will be conducted from the funeral home parlor with the Rev. F.L. “Wink” McQuain officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Philippi. The Talbott Funeral Home in Belington is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Melville Lee “Punch” O’Brien.
