Milan Junior “Smiley” Evans, a resident of Files Creek Road, Beverly, West Virginia, passed from this life on Friday, July 16, 2021 surrounded by his wife Barbara and his family.
He was born on Tuesday, October 30, 1945 in Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late Milan “Brownie” and Effie Evans.
On August 19, 1969, he was united in marriage to the former Barbara Lantz, who survives at their home in Beverly.
Also left to cherish his memory are his three children, Christina Dawn Varner and spouse Martin “Marty” of Windsor, South Carolina, Shannon Dell Evans and spouse Michael Isenhart of Lugoff, South Carolina, and Bryan Joseph Evans and spouse Melissa “Missy” of Beverly, West Virginia. One brother, Melvin Marion Evans and wife Gladys of Henderson, NC. Six Grandchildren, Chelsea Nicole Haddix and spouse Jeremy of Philippi, West Virginia, Shae Danielle Scott and companion Josh Burnside of Mabie, West Virginia, Milan James “MJ” Shrader and spouse Elizabeth of Hendricks, West Virginia, Justin David Shrader and fiancé Megan McGee of Valley Head, West Virginia, Korri Leigh Evans of Morgantown, West Virginia and Aubrie Paige Evans of Beverly, West Virginia. Six Great Grandchildren, Greyson Tipton Haddix, Owen Alston Haddix, Jordan Grant McCune, Callie Hope Burnside, Tanner Allen Burnside and Shelby Holden Shrader.
Smiley was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1963, where he was the manager for the Football team under Coach Wimer and Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1967, where he was a member of the ROTC and obtained degrees in English, Physical Education and Health. He was a teacher for 33 years at various Randolph County Schools including Coalton High, Elkins Junior High and Elkins High School, where he also coached Baseball, Basketball and Track and drove the bus.
He had a love for camping, hunting, playing his guitar, and berry picking but especially loved his family. He was a member of various community organizations including the Jaycees, Lions Club and The Izaak Walton League where he held various positions including President, Vice President and Board member.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations be made to WV Caring Hospice and/or The Izaak Walton League.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Monday from 4 PM to 7 PM. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 11 AM. Pastor Leon Brown will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
