Mildred “Ruth” Carr Slayton, 69, a resident of Breakwater Drive, Elkhart, Ind., departed this life Wednesday morning, Feb. 4, 2009, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Jeanne Slayton at Bristol, Ind.

She was born Monday, Jan. 29, 1940, at Bowden, a daughter of the late Orval Lawrence Carr and Arbutus Elizabeth Barkley Carr.

On Sept. 28, 1962, at Lanham, Md., she was married to Ronald Brent Slayton, who survives at Elkhart, Ind.

Also surviving are two sons, Donald Slayton and wife, JoAnn, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Brent Slayton and wife, Jeanne, of Bristol, Ind.; one daughter, Ruth Fisher and husband, Paul, of Goshen, Ind.; two brothers, Jack Carr and wife, Brenda, and and Jerry Carr and wife, Carol, all of Elkins; two sisters, Jean Iseli and husband, Neil, of Cummins, Ga., and Shirley Booth and husband, Bill, of Heathsville, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are two brothers, Donald and James Carr.

Mildred attended the schools of Randolph County, was a homemaker, was a member of the Women of the Moose at Nitro, enjoyed her grandchildren and loved to play bingo.

She had traveled through most of the United States and overseas due to her husband being in the military and was a Protestant by faith.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 today at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins.

Final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the funeral home chapel.

The Rev. Janet S. Jenkins will officiate and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road, Elkins, WV.

The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Mildred “Ruth” Carr Slayton.
