Mildred Ruth Maxson “Millie” Gainer, age 93 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Sunday morning October 20, 2013 at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center in Elkins, WV.

She was born Tuesday, June 8, 1920 at Elkins, WV a daughter of the late Russell A. and Gertrude Weese Maxson. On January 28, 1943 at Baltimore, MD she was married to Edgar Glen “Doodle” Gainer of Elkins while he was on active duty with the U. S. Navy. He preceded her in death July 30, 2011. They had celebrated sixty-eight years of marriage. Surviving are one son Marshall “Terry” Gainer, of Elkins; one grandson, Aaron Marshall Gainer, a master’s degree student at West Virginia University; three nieces, Mary E. White, of Elkins; Rebecca J. Accord, of Manassas, VA; and Lois J. March, of Elkins; and six nephews, James M. Maxson; and Robin R. Maxson, both of Elkins; Danny D. Maxson, of Lenoir, NC; Rockie A. Maxson; Johnnie W. Maxson; and Stephen R. Maxson, all of Elkins.

Preceding her in death are three brothers, Jim; Marvin; and Russ Maxson, Jr.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins, where she was a very active member and served on many committees, especially those involved in fund raising. She was a long-standing member and president of the church choir, and very proud of being the first woman to serve on the Church’s Board of Trustees.

She was an avid sports fan, especially for Elkins High School, West Virginia University, and college basketball. She loved traveling, gardening, canning her own food, being a great cook, crafts, decorating for the seasons, and doing the little things for her family that always meant so much

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 11 AM. The Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, WV. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Unit, 169 Diamond Street, Elkins, WV 26241 or to the First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.
