Nancy Caroline Brady Wilson, 95, a resident of 109 High St., Elkins, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at home. She had been in declining health for the past few months.

Surviving are two children, Grace Wilson Sundelin of Elkins and Merritt Wilson III of Pittsburgh, Pa. Andrew Wilson Sundelin, her only grandchild, survives in Denver, Colo. A niece, Nancy Brady Haught of Charleston, also survives her.

One brother, Dr. A. Spates Brady, and one sister, Mary Brady Wills, preceded her in death.

She was born in Fairmont on July 21, 1908, the daughter of the late A. Spates Brady and Grace Mabie Brady.

She moved with her family to Elkins around 1922. Her mother died when she was a small child.

Mrs. Wilson was a graduate of the Grier School in Tyrone, Pa., and attended Wellesley College. She was a student teacher at Taylor-Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh and graduate from the Pennsylvania College for Women, now known as Chatham College, with a degree in French. Later she pursued post-graduate studies at Butler University in Indianapolis.

She was married to the late Merritt Wilson Jr. on June 21, 1934. During World War II, she moved with her husband to Guatemala City, Guatemala, where her family resided for three years. She became fluent in Spanish while living in Guatemala and traveled extensively throughout Central and South America.

In 1947, the family moved to Indianapolis, Ind., where she became active in the Second Presbyterian Church. Upon returning to Elkins in 1962, Mrs. Wilson became a substitute Spanish teacher for Randolph County schools and was active in the Elkins Civic Association.

An avid outdoorswoman, she kept active gardening, swimming and biking into her mid-80s.

She was a longtime member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Brooks Bird Club, the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy as well as a number of other environmental and conservation groups.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the family home at 109 High St. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jeff Falter will officiate and interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery.
