Oral Eugene “Gene” Anderson, 87, passed away at Trinity East in Steubenville, Ohio, on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, from complications from pneumonia.

He was born Jan. 24, 1916, in Cleveland, W.Va., the son of the late Robert Lewis and Goldie Dove Powers Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Pearl Anderson, and his second wife, Goldie; two brothers, Robert Dale Anderson and Donald Mason Anderson; and three sisters, Willie Thelma Dever, Wilma Virginia Groves and Irma Bernice Harper.

Surviving are one son, David Eugene Anderson and wife, Emma, of Bloomingdale, Ohio; one daughter, Donna Lee Roby and husband, Jimmie, of Wakeman, Ohio; six grandchildren, Catherine Lynn Johnson, Steven David Anderson, Jimmie Wayne Roby, Karen Lee Ferguson, L. Diane Coury and Michael G. Roby; 14 great-grandchildren, Jarin David Anderson, Sara Jill Anderson, Shannon Brooke Anderson, Darren Paul Johnson, Robert David Johnson, Hanna Catherine Johnson, Rachel Lynne Johnson, Seth Robert Johnson, Caleb Lewis Johnson, Phillip R. Roby, Cynthia K. Roby, Jennifer Lee Coury, Jamie L. Coury and Adam M. Ferguson; one great-great-grandchild, Cage M. Roby; one brother, Paul Ferrell Anderson of Staunton, Va.; and two sisters, Helena Catherine Paulk of Marberry, Md., and Iris Dawn Ferrell of Woodstock, Va.

Gene Anderson was a devoted husband and father.

Except for a short hiatus to work in the shipyards during World War II, he labored to raise his family on a farm in Cleveland.

He was later employed by and retired from Holly River State Park in Webster County at the age of 67.

He was a familiar figure to seasonal campers at the park and campers from many places around the East became acquainted with him and sought him out when they returned yearly.

He lived with his son in Bloomingdale for the last several years of his life.

Friends may call at the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio, today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will also be at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cleveland Community Building with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating.
