Phillip R. Smith, age 93 years, a resident of the Harpertown-gilman Road, passed away at 11:30 AM Thursday, December 6, 2012 in the Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 28, 1919 at Petit, WV, a son of the late Jacob M. and Rhoda Allender Smith.

On July 20, 1940 in Monterey, VA, he was married to the former Georgia Lea Workman Smith who preceded him in death November 14, 2004.

They had celebrated 64 years of marriage.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving is one son, James M. Smith and wife Luwana of Elkins.

Two daughters, Dena Griffith and husband Don, and Patty Crissman and husband Jay all of Elkins.

Also surviving are six grandchildren, Laura Sigley and husband Scott of Clarksburg; April Smith of Virginia Beach, VA; Marsha Griffith of Beverly; Tom Phillips and wife Lynn of Gloucester County, VA; Lisa Caruso and husband Vince of Wheeling; and Sheila Healy of Elkins.

Two step grandchildren, Seth Crissman and wife Ana of Texas and Fae Skyla and husband Robert of Louisiana. Nine great grandchildren, Cassie and Cole Sigley, Shae Jones and Addison Carney, Megan and Jamie Phillips, Vincent and Anna Caruso and Brody Healy, one step great granddaughter, Sienna Skyla and one great-great grandchild, Aiden Sigley and many nieces and nephews and a special friend, Lily Mae Isner also survive.

Also preceding him in death was one brother, Norman Smith and three sisters, Agnes Wilmoth, Edna Workman, and Genevieve Moore.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) where he worked at Camp Thornwood in Pocahontas County. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the 544th Engineer Boat-shore Regiment in the Island of Honshu.

He had also worked for Kisler Leather Company, Channel Grocery, the City of Elkins and Stuart McNunn Construction Company.

He was a member of the Elkins Church of the Nazarene for more than 50 years. He served on the church board and as an usher.

He and his late wife served as church custodians for many years.

Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Monday, December 10, 2012 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 11th from the funeral home chapel.

Pastor Terry Burgess will officiate and interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.

Full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elkins Church of the Nazarene, PO Box 50, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mr. Smith.

The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Phillip R. Smith.
