Robert Marvin Simons, age 84, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. He was born on June 20, 1927 in Buckhannon, WV to the late Henry Gilbert and Jessie Wagner Simon, and was a current resident of Beverly Hills, MI. He married Mary Kathryn Smallridge on July 9, 1949 in Buckhannon, WV. Mr. Simons, graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1952, earned a Masters of Public Health Degree from the University of MI in 1958, and did post grad work at Indiana University in 1964, and Marquette University in 1966. He was a Fellow-american Public Health Education 1957-1958. He retired as Executive Director of the Michigan Heart Assoc., in 1989 after 28 years of service. Mr. Simons was a member of the Lions Club International for 57 years. He also was a member of the Elks, the Masons and the Shriners. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1944-1945. Mr. Simons was preceded in death by his mother and father, a sister, Helen Cutright (Simons) and a brother, Melvin Simons. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Kathryn (Smallridge) Simons; his sons, Robert Brian Simons (Kimberly) of Chelsea, MI and Scott Alan Simons of Chicago, IL; his grandchildren, Drew and Emily Simons of Chelsea, MI; two sisters, Faye Lewis of Canton, OH and Luella Cvechko (John) of Buckhannon and two sisters in law, Patty Simons of Buckhannon and Patti Zara (Gene) of Mount Clare, WV. He was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Simons was devoted to his church and community, volunteering much of his time to worthy causes. He was an avid golfer and had a love of planes and flying and had obtained his pilot’s license. Mr. Simons was a Methodist by faith. Visitation of Funeral Service was held in Troy, MI with the Rev. David Huseltine officiating. Memorial Tributes may be made to the Beverly Hills United Methodist Church, 20000 W. 13 Mile Road, Beverly Hills, MI 48025 or a charity of donor’s choice.
