Sylvia Mae Shaw 1911-2002

Sylvia Mae Shaw, 90, a resident of the Long Term Care Broaddus Hospital in Philippi, and former resident of 18605 McMullen Hwy., Maryland, passed away Monday evening, April 29, 2002, at the Long Term Care Broaddus Hospital.

She was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Nestorville, a daughter of the late Herbert Crites and Dora Nestor Crites.

She was twice married. First, she married Olen P. Clevenger. Second, she married Dennis L. Shaw, whom she married on April 1, 1939. After 52 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on June 29, 1991.

Surviving are two sons, Willard P. Clevenger and wife, Ruth; one stepson, Wilford Leo Shaw and wife, Caroline, of Philippi; four sisters, Mrs Euey (Neva) Hershman, Freeport, Ohio, Mrs. Lee (Reba) Hershman, Tacy, Mrs. Robert L. (Maxine) Nestor, Nestorville, and Mrs. Lyal (Vonda Rae) Funk, Tacy; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Hubert (Helen) Crites, Florida; one grandchild, Brian Paul Clevenger and wife, Kendra, of Trinity, N.C.; two stepgrandchildren, Sylvia Ellen Lantz and husband, Larry R., of Lost Creek, and Gloria Dawn Wentz and husband, Glenn Jr., of Philippi; one great-grandchild, Wade Dalton Clevenger, Trinity, N.C.; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Stephanie Elaine Foltz and husband, Bobby, of Philippi, and Sheree Dawn Wentz of Philippi; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild, Hayley Jayde Foltz of Philippi.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, William Herbert Clevenger; one brother, Hubert Crites; and one sister, Mrs. Ralph (Wilma Lea) Frey.

Mrs. Shaw was a homemaker. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 41, Philippi, and a member of St. Mary’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received after 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday until 2 p.m., the service hour. The Rev. Bryan Headly will officiating. The Order of Eastern Stars will conduct services at 7 p.m. Thursday. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Chapel Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home in Philippi is in charge of the arrangements.
