T. Robert “Bob” Valentine, 53, Elkins City Treasurer, and a resident of 121 Robert E. Lee Ave., Elkins, departed this life at 1:21 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at his home.He had been in declining health for the past year and death was attributed to cancer.

He was born April 11, 1949, at Elkins, a son of the late Thomas Frank “Wimpy” Valentine and Cornelia Levier Valentine.

On June 13, 1970, at the Saint Brendan Catholic Church at Elkins, with the Rev. Father Charles McCallister officiating, he was married to the former Maria Varchetto, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Thomas Robert “T.R.” Valentine, Elkins; three daughters, Nikki Valentine, Elkins, Mandy Valentine Belan and husband, Stephen, Elkins, and Erin Valentine, Arlington, Va.; one brother, William Jeffrey “Jeff” Valentine, Elkins; and one granddaughter, Maria Harter.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1967. He received a bachelor of science degree in business, from Davis & Elkins College in 1973. He was employed by the West Virginia Housing Development Fund and in 1996, became the city treasurer for the city of Elkins, a position he held until the time of his death. He had devoted his life to community service. He was past president and was a life member of the Elkins Kiwanis Club, was awarded the Mike J. Miller Kiwanian of the Year award during 1986, was a West Virginia District, Distinguished Lieutenant Governor for Division 4 from 1990 to 1991 and was instrumental in the operation of the Kiwanis Corn Dog Wagon for the past 15 years, which benefits Kiwanis Service Projects. He was president of Habitat for Humanity and along with a small group of dedicated volunteers, had just completed and dedicated the fifth Habitat House in the Elkins area.

He was an assistant director for the Mountain State Forest Festival for the past five years and a member of the Democratic Executive Committee. He was a member of Saint Brendan Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister of the Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

On Thursday at 6 p.m. at Saint Brendan Catholic Church, at Elkins, the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held with the Rev. Father Charles McCallister and the Rev. Father William Anderson as the presiders. Friends will be received following the Liturgy from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church. A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Saint Brendan Cemetery. Interment will follow. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 536, Elkins, W.Va. 26241, Hospice Care Corporation, 629 North Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241 or the Saint Brendan Catholic Church Building Fund, PO Box 2205, Elkins, W.Va. 26241.
