Thomas Burton “Jack” Griffith, 84, a former resident of Hambleton, and more recently a resident of Memorial Drive, Parsons, where he had made his home with his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Tina Griffith, departed this life Monday morning, Jan. 27, 2003, at home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to pneumonia.

He was born May 5, 1918, at Whitmer, a son of the late Roy Lester Griffith and Mary Virginia Kerns Griffith.

During 1959, in Georgia, he was married to Opal Mae Snyder, who preceded him in death on Sept. 16, 1965.

Surviving are two sons, James Daniel Griffith and wife, Tina, Parsons, and Michael Anthony Griffith and wife, Mary, Hambleton; one daughter, Ginger Bennett, Ohio; five grandchildren, James D. Griffith Jr., Joshua S. Griffith, both of Parsons, Sarah A. Griffith, Eric M. Griffith, both of Hambleton, and Marshall Summerville, Ohio.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Faye Griffith; three brothers, Joseph, Charles “Bud” and Phil Griffith; and one sister, Genevieve Fick.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater, and was awarded the American Defense Ribbon and the Bronze Star. He worked for Dupont Chemical Co. of Charleston, the Kingsford Charcoal Co. of Parsons, the Kelly Foundry at Zanesville, Ohio, and was co-owner of the former Twinkle Twin Taxi of Parsons and the Parsons Nursery. He attended the Church of Christ at Bretz. He was a lifetime member of the former Garnett Post American Legion and a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will receive friends at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday at 11 a.m. The H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion will present the American flag. The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate and interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows. The Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Thomas Burton “Jack” Griffith.
