VELMA EMOGENE VARNER MOATS, age 85 years, a resident of the Clover Run Community, St. George, WV, departed this life early Saturday morning May 25, 2013 at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins, WV.

She was born Tuesday, October 4, 1927 at Clover Run, Tucker County, WV, a daughter of the late Porter A. and Melvina “Millie” Shaffer Varner. On July 21, 1951 at Oakland, MD, she was married to Ward Maree Moats, who survives. They had celebrated sixty one years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, William “Bill” Moats and wife Sharon of Clover Run; one daughter, Mildred “Millie” Marie Shaffer and husband Tom of Clover Run; four grandchildren, Kristi Wolford and husband David of Fairmont, Tommy Shaffer of Morgantown, Travis William Moats and Scott Wesley Moats, both of Clover Run; and two great grandchildren, Zachariah Wolford and Tristan Wolford, both of Fairmont; and one sister in law, Wilma Moats of Tacy Community.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John Edward Varner and one sister, Mildred Ruth Varner.

She attended the one room Harper School at Clover Run. She was a Homemaker and a member of the Union Chapel Church. She was a noted cook, enjoyed making big meals, gardening and canning and spending time with her family.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 11:30AM. The Rev. Neil Precht and The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate and interment will follow at the Cross Roads Cemetery in the Tacy Community.
