Viola Virginia Slayton Giambrone, 90, a resident of 314 Reed St., departed this life Friday evening, July 18, 2003, at the Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in failing health.

She was born Jan. 18, 1913, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Cline Elias Slayton and Lillian May Hogue Slayton Luzier.

In Elkins, on June 1, 1929, she was married to Louis Giambrone, who preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 1992. They had celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Surviving are five daughters, Carmelina Mae Duckworth of Martinsburg, Lillian Jean Agnew of Elkins, Anita Louise Bowers of Colonial Heights, Va., Andrea Leah Antolini and husband, Carl, of Elkins and Cynthia Lynn Coontz and husband, Warren, of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Donald Slayton of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Louise Angelo of Martinsburg and Doris Mae McCarley of Pasco, Wa.; a stepsister, Willa Mae Sherbert of Camp Springs, Md.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, James Ronald, Cecil K. and Clarence R. Slayton; and two sons-in-law, Bernard Duckworth and William G. Bowers.

She attended the schools of Randolph County. During World War II, she worked as a blind riveter for the Glen L. Martin Co. in Baltimore. She loved cooking and she was well known as the cook and cake decorator for Lillian’s Flour Box.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home on Sunday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Sunday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, a prayer service was recited by the Rev. Father William Anderson. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated today at 10 a.m. at St. Brendan Catholic Church. The Rev. Father William Anderson was the presider and interment followed at St. Brendan Cemetery at Elkins. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to St. Brendan Catholic Church, Building Fund, PO Box 2205, Elkins, W.Va., 26241.
