Virgil H. Koon 1921-2002 Obituary

Virgil H. Koon, 81, of HC 71 Box 13, Ellamore, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born March 27, 1921, at Mabie, a son of the late Freeman H. and Etta Mae Goodwin Koon.

On Feb. 14, 1942, he married Edna Booth Koon, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Gary Koon, Ellamore, Danny Koon, Madisonville, Ky., and Michael Koon, Scott Depot; one brother, Rex Koon, Philippi; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack Koon and Keith Hinkle.

Mr. Koon was a business owner of Koon’s Service Center. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Before entering the Navy he worked for Bethlehem Fairfield Ship Yard building liberty ship. He was the founding member of Ellamore Volunteer Fire Department and served many years with the Upshur County Emergency Squad. He was a member of the West Virginia Turkey Hunters Hall of Fame.

He attended Gertrude Chapel United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received at Poling-st. Clair Funeral Home today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Vicki Shepard officiating. Interment will follow in Buckhannon Memorial Park in Buckannon.
