Virginia Liggett Hickerson Wolfe, 89, a former resident of 219 Elm St. in Elkins and more recently a resident of Valentine’s Personal Care Home, departed this life Monday afternoon, Oct. 6, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health.

She was born Friday, April 10, 1914, at Beverly, the daughter of the late Charles Edwin Hickerson and Bessie Reese Shoemaker Hickerson. On April 19, 1947, at Piedmont, she was married to George Ferdinand Wolfe Jr., who preceded her in death Nov. 25, 1962.

Surviving are one daughter, the Rev. Dr. Nancy Wolfe Holt and husband, the Rev. Charles R. Holt of Landsdowne, Pa.; one sister, Elizabeth Pentz of Chester, Pa.; three grandsons, Chad Holt of Pittsburgh, Scott Holt of Ardmore Pa., and Kevin Holt and wife, Kim, of West Chester, Pa.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were one brother, Charles E. Hickerson, Jr., and one sister, Mary Ellen Poffenberger.

Virginia received her bachelor of science degree from Madison State Teacher’s College, now known as James Madison University, and was a graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing at Cumberland, Md. She was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Nursing Corps. She was also a school teacher, having taught home economics at Davis High School and later teaching nursing at the Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebekahs, the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center, the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Friends will be received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Charlest R. Holt will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 Randolph Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241.
