Wallace E. Varner, 94, a former resident of the Poe Run community and a patient at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center for the past six years, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at the center.

He was born Jan. 22, 1909, at Hosterman in Pocahontas County, the son of the late John M. and Hattie Varner.

He was married to Cleo N. Schoonover Varner, who preceded him in death in 1983.

He is survived by one son, Elmer O. Varner of the Highland Park community; and three daughters, Bertha Arbogast of Bunker Hill, Lillie B. Peterson of Arnold, Mo., and Mrs. David (Margaret) Stalnaker of Elkins. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were one daughter, Helen Regester; four brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.

Mr. Varner was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He had owned and operated the Varner Lumber Co. on Poe Run.

He attended the Wayside United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Walter Blough will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens where full military rites will be accorded by H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3647 of Elkins. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins for Wallace E. Varner.
