Walter (Laddie) Schmidlen, Jr., age 81 years, a resident of Elkins, WV passed from this life on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at his home.

Although he was in declining health, his death was peaceful, yet unexpected.

He was born on Thursday, September 26, 1940 at Alpena, WV., the son of the late Walter L. and Virginia (Knutti) Schmidlen, Sr.

On August 3, 1962, he was married to his loving wife, Susan Ann (Stonestreet) Schmidlen who survives.

They had celebrated 59 years of marriage. Laddie is survived by his two sons, Walter Schmidlen III, Joseph Schmidlen and wife, Debbie, and Brenda Schmidlen.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Walter Schmidlen IV, Brittany Wamsley, Joseph Schmidlen, Seth Roy, and four great grandchildren Caroline Schmidlen, Avery Wamsley, Jamison Roy and Hayden Roy. He was “PapPap” to Trevor, Trenton and Tanner Hamrick.

He is also survived by one sister, Abigail Humphrey and husband Ellis, sister-in-law, Patricia Kitzmiller, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were sister and brother-in-law, Claire and MaryAnn Daft and brother-in-law, John Kimbleton.
Laddie graduated from Beverly High School with the class of 1959 and attended Potomac State College.

Following college, he owned and operated Willow Bend Farms, Inc., a successful Dairy and Beef operation, as well as Country Tractor Sales, Inc., with his son Walter Schmidlen, III.

Over the years he was very active in the agriculture industry, promoting and serving on numerous local, state and regional boards/committees.

He was a member of the Beverly Presbyterian Church.

He was also a member of the Randolph Lodge #55 AF & AM Beverly, WV, and Osiris Shrine, Wheeling, WV. Laddie also served on numerous Agricultural lending boards over the years.

He served as President of the WV Farm Credit Association, served as a Director on the Farm Credit of the Virginia’s Board, and served as a Regional Director on the Ag First Board of Columbia, South Carolina.
Laddie was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr and Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 10-11AM on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

Final rights will be conducted at the Funeral Home at 11AM on Wednesday.

The Reverend Richard Cardot will officiate, and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens in Elkins, WV.
