Wanda Ruth Taylor Thompson, 87, a former resident of Beverly, and a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at 3 p.m. in Davis Memorial Hospital where she had been admitted Sunday evening.

She was born July 22, 1915, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Clarence Bert and Myrtle Louk Taylor.

On Nov. 2, 1940, she was united in marriage to Bert Duane Thompson, who survives at Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Boyd (Susanne Duane) Smith and Mrs. Bobby (Debbie Lynn) Snelson, both of Beverly; one sister, Hilda Hinchman of Virginia Beach, Va.; one niece, Jane Hoxmeier of Virginia Beach, Va.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Boyd Laban Smith, Danielle Lynn Buford, Donna Sue Pfleging, Bobby Duane Snelson and Joshua Earl Snelson; five great-grandchildren, Ashley Smith, Amber Danielle Smith, Adam Lawerence Smith, Shaina Danielle Buford and Harrison Charles Pfleging.

Preceding her in death besides his parents was one son, Donald Ray Thompson, and one infant brother.

In the 1940s she operated Hi-Way Cabins and Gas Station with her husband, Bert, on Dodson Run Road.

She worked in the first nursery in the Randolph County area under the FDR administration. Also under Roosevelt’s administration she helped several people become U.S. citizens, and she also taught members of the CCC Camps to read and write.

Mrs. Thompson was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge 200 of Beverly, the homemakers club and WSCS of Beverly United Methodist.

She graduated from Beverly High School in 1934 and attended Davis & Elkins College, Fairmont State and West Virginia University. She also served on the Republican Committee in the 1950s.

Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Friday after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel on Saturday at 11 a.m. Jack Howell pastor of Tygart Valley Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Mouse Cemetery in Cravensdale.

The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Wanda Ruth Taylor Thompson.
