William Dale Cain, 69, a retired U.S. Army sergeant major, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, Va

Bill, as he was known to his friends, was born Nov. 12, 1933, in Elkins and graduated from Elkins High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

He was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Woodbridge.

Bill served 30 years with the Army, and during that time was stationed in Germany, France and Panama. He served in Korea and Vietnam.

He and his wife, Joyce V. Cain, moved to their home n Marumsco Woods in 1964 where they raised their family.

After serving in the Army, Bill worked for a Navy contractor for 20 years before retiring to a life of enjoyable weekends at the family cabin in Martinsburg. Bill also loved to spend time gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joyce Vanscoy Cain; one son, David Cain of Stafford, Va.; two daughters, Shelley C. Palkovic of Martinsburg and Kelley Powers of Largo, Fla.

Bill had seven beloved grandchildren, triplets Bethany, Megan and Ryan Morris, Connor Palkovic, and Ashley, Brittany and Brandon Cain.

Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, Va. with Chaplain Edward C. Leis officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s name to Hospice of Northern Virginia, Prince William Clinical Office, 9540 Center St., Suite 330, Manassas, Va. 20110-5550.
