William Mackie Vandevender 1922-2002 Obituary

William “Mackie” Vandevender, 80, of Bartow, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital of a sudden illness.

Mr. Vandevender was born March 17, 1922, at Thornwood, a son of the late Ora and Nelia Mae Tilda Slayton Vandevender.

He was a member and trustee of Thornwood Community Church, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was retired from Howes Leather Co. and was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Brian Edward Vandevender and April Lynn Newbrough; two sisters, Carrie Mae Starks and Bessie Marie Vandevender; and one brother, Berlin Brown Vandevender.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary Charlene Adams Vandevender; three daughters, “Judy” Mae Vandevender Greer and husband, Freddie, of Thornwood, Judith “Kay” Vandevender Newbrough and husband, Frederick, of Worthington, and JoAnn “Rae” Vandevender Gilardi and husband, Michael, of Thornwood; six sons, Dale Lee Harper and wife, Shirley, of Riverton, William Charles Vandevender and wife, Mary Ann, of Frank, David Lynn Vandevender and wife, Donna, of Durbin, Daniel Thomas Vandevender of Thornwood, Dallas Eugene Vandevender and wife, Elsie, of Green Bank, and Douglas Phay Vandevender and girlfriend, Amy Burns, of Thornwood; two sisters, Mary Louise Vandevender White of Riverton, and Gladys Lee Vandevender of Franklin; two brothers, Jimmie Vandevender and wife, Gladys, of Bartow, and Doll Arnold Vandevender of Thornwood; one sister-in-law, Bettie L. Vandevender; 19 grandchildren, Sandra Ann Harper Waldron and husband, Randy, of Petersburg, Mark Dale Harper and wife, Tammy, of Petersburg, Aleisha Ann Vandevender Morgan and husband, Larry, of Arbovale, Travis William Vandevender of Frank, Judy “Jeanette” Greer Currence and friend, Larry, of Thornwood, Mary “Marcella” Greer Rexrode and husband, Kenneth, of Durbin, “Ava” Anne Greer Hayes and husband, Scott, of Durbin, David Lynn Vandevender Jr. and wife, Angela, of Durbin, Joseph “Joey” Lee Vandevender and wife, Michelle, of Brick, N.J., William “Billy” Berlin Vandevender and wife, Jeanie, of Freehold, N.J., Frederick Ray Newbrough and wife, Theresa, of Chester, Va., Melissa Kay Newbrough Long and husband, Allen, of Mannington, Thomas Lee Vandevender and wife, Miranda, of Thornwood, Misty Lynn Vandevender of Green Bank, Dallas Orion Vandevender of Green Bank, Michael Allen Gilardi Jr. of Maryland, Lana Marie Gilardi, Jessica Joelle Gilardi and Tasha Lynn Vandevender, all of Thornwood; 19 great-grandchildren, Kelsey Lynn Harper, Alexandra Brooke Waldron and Adrianna Michelle Waldron, all of Petersburg, Brianna Nicole Morgan, Arbovale, Coty Spring Rexrode and Cory Levi Rexrode, Timothy Scott Hayes and Ashley Paige Hayes, all of Durbin, Casey Jon Currence and Sabrina Rachael Currence, both of Thornwood, Marcus Allen Vandevender of California, Brian Matthew Vandevender of South Carolina, Austin Tyler DeHaven and Ryan Andrew Douglas, both of Durbin, Nadine Georgette Vandevender of Brick, N.J., Kathryn Danielle Newbrough and Johnathan Ray Newbrough, both of Chester, Va., William John Newbrough of Worthington, and Michaela Gilardi of Maryland; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends will be received at Thornwood Community Church today from 6 p.m. and until the funeral service Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence Bennet, the Rev. Robert Brown and the Rev. George Bassford officiating. Interment will follow in Vandevender Cemetery at Thornwood. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale is in charge of the arrangements.
