Our loving mother, Winiferd Venora Fortney, 81, a resident of Stalnaker Run community, went home to be with the Lord and Daddy, a place she longed for, on Monday, March 24, 2003, at 9:50 a.m. in the Davis Memorial Hospital. Death was sudden and unexpected.

Born Nov. 4, 1921, in Upshur County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Burton and Icie Maude Swick Harris.

On Dec. 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Fredrick Dow Fortney, who preceded her in death on July 24, 1994. They were married for 53 years.

Winiferd’s life was her family, having been survived by two daughters, Linda Kay Ferguson and husband Lynn, and Lenora Lea Channell and husband, Nick; four sons, Larry Earl Fortney and wife Betty, Loren Dow Fortney and wife Anita, Lynn Fredrick Fortney and Lewis James Fortney and wife, Debbie; one brother, Clarence Harris; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Smith.

In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren, Rick, Randy, Joe, Lynn, Nicka, Brian, Paul, Nathan, Melissa, Marcia and Tiffany; and six great-grandchildren, Heather, Lucas, Emma, Emily, Jeremiah and Talia. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two sisters, Wilda Pratt and Othella Wentz; one half sister; five brothers, Wilson, Arthur, Lenord, Lawrence and Orin Harris; and two half brothers.

Winiferd was a cook at the Pickens Logging Camp. She was well known for cleaning houses around the Elkins area. She then went to work for Davis Memorial Hospital in the Dietary Department and retired in 1976.

Winiferd was one of the original members of the Randolph County Cancer Care Corp. and was presented a certificate of appreciation on June 15, 1966.

Mrs. Fortney attended the Israel United Methodist Church and enjoyed having coffee on Saturday mornings at Ye Olde Donut Shoppe with her daughter, Linda, and friends.

Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home today after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Rev. J.D. Conley, preacher of the Goff Street Church of Christ, will officiate. Interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Winiferd Venora Fortney.
